WHANGAPOUA  &  NEW CHUMS  BEACHES

Only a short 25 minute drive, over the ranges heading for Maturingi, are a couple of our favourite beaches – Whangapoua, New Chums and Opera Point. These are all well worth a visit. New Chums is the most well known.

As you approach Whangapoua village, just past the boat ramp, there is a slight incline. Here on your right you will see a small car park with a sign saying “Opera Point Historic Reserve”. Park here and follow the path through the bush down to the beach. Follow the beach as far as you can out to the rocky point at the harbour entrance – an idyllic place to relax and maybe have a picnic.

Only a 15 minute walk.

As you drive through Whangapoua village the beach is on your right. The best spot to park is at the end of the road.  The sand on this beach is white and soft. There is very little shade. It's a great beach for a swim.

At the north end of Whangapoua Beach there is a river to cross on your way to a track to New Chums Beach.  The river is usually only ankle deep except, of course, at high tide. Once on the track, follow the curve of the bay over boulders, pebbles and sandy bits. The track takes off into the bush and back to the bay a couple of times before finally heading over a saddle towards New Chums.

After the saddle the track descends and passes through a Nikau Palm grove and finally out onto the pristine pink sand that is Wainuiototo or New Chums Beach.

There is plenty of shade on this beach under the Pohutakawa trees. This place definitely has a “wow” factor. There are no shops or signs of habitation and generally very few people. Relax, swim or surf.

As you pass over the saddle on your way to Chums Beach there is a track on your right up to a high point where you can look down onto New Chums and Whangapoua Beach. This is quite a scramble and not for the unfit or those not keen on heights.

If you don’t mind a little more driving on partly unsealed roads, check out Opito Bay for some outstanding scenery and the many gorgeous beaches you will drive by.

Call in to Luke’s Kitchen at the entrance to Black Jack Road for an amazing Pizza.
